Emergency Room Bill Without Insurance

Emergency Room Bill Without Insurance

What really determines the cost of your visit to a hospital emergency room is how severe or how serious your condition is. It depends on the amount of resources used when treating your condition. These resources might include facilities for monitoring, treating, testing, and assessing your health condition.

It will actually cost you some more if your case is a complex one because, in this case, diagnosis, coordination, examinations, and increased tests might be required to help stabilize you.

However, you should know that all we have listed above are emergency room visits for people who do not have health insurance coverage. The charge of visiting an emergency room is based on how severe your condition is, just as we stated at the beginning of this review.

Physician charges, procedures, medications, laboratory tests, and diagnostic tests are not included in the emergency room charge. The complexity of the services that the nurses rendered also affects how much your emergency room bill will be.

These services include;

  • Monitoring of patient
  • Assessing the condition of the patient
  • Pain management
  • Types of procedures performed on a patient
  • Coordination of care the patient received alongside other caregivers and departments
  • How complex the treatment given to the patient is
  • Additional services are required by the patient like discharge planning, precautions, interpreter, isolation, and security.

One thing you have to bear in mind when visiting the emergency room is learning how to understand your bill because you are bound to receive multiple bills for paying a visit to the emergency room. Some people would be hit with additional charges on their hospital bills after paying a visit to the emergency room.

These additional bills might be due to medications prescribed, X-rays and imaging, laboratory work, and other important treatment, supplies, or procedures. The physicians who were also involved in your treatment has their own separate bill. You would get a bill from the physician that treated you in the emergency room and all other physicians involved in offering care during your stay at the hospital.

This might be a radiologist who reads out an X-ray to you or maybe for another imaging service. Another thing you should be aware of is your rights. Just because you do not have health insurance doesn’t mean you are not entitled to get treated in an emergency room.

The fact that you are uninsured might make you not familiar with your rights when paying a visit to the emergency room. If you meet the federal guidelines of what an emergency room involves, you would realize that you have the right to get treated in an emergency room. First, you have to understand what truly qualifies a case as an emergency case;

  • Emergency cases are cases where body organs or body functions are impaired severely.
  • They are also cases that are life-threatening or severe
  • It is also a case where delivery is at hand in the case of a pregnant woman

Whether you have health insurance or not, every hospital or emergency room must be willing to provide patients with adequate care if they have to be rushed to an emergency room. Furthermore, some visits do not qualify to be treated as an emergency case, and such visits include;

  • Visiting the emergency room when the situation isn’t a life-threatening one
  • Wellness checks, prenatal care, follow up appointments, screenings, and ongoing doctor visits
  • Events that are not life-threatening like flu, rashes, and cold

After assessing your immediate situation and being stabilized, the hospital might choose to discharge or transfer you. You should also know that just because you were treated while uninsured doesn’t mean that every trip to the emergency room is free.

You still have responsibility for the bill, and you would discuss with the hospital to come up with a workout plan. It would help if you also considered asking for discounts or charity care options that might be available so you can offset some bills.
