Someone Hit My Parked Car And Left A Note – What Do I Do Next?

It is okay for you to be upset when you go back to the parking lot and find out that your car has been scratched. However, one thing that you should be grateful for is the fact that the offender left you a note because that would actually set you on the right track towards repairing your vehicle.

If someone hit my parked car and left a note, then the note is definitely going to contain the person’s contact number, full name as well as insurance details. This note can be used to file a claim so you can get compensation for damage done to your car.

What you should do next if this happens to you is to report to the police and make sure that you obtain an accident report. You should also ensure that the police see the note that was left on your car, and it is also necessary for the person who hit your car also to report the case to his insurance company.

It is now up to the insurance company to contact you and make a statement regarding claims. Reporting the case to your own insurance company is also okay as well, and you should also report the name of the person who left the note.

Furthermore, if there were no witnesses around then, the police can use surveillance cameras to figure out what truly happened. Photos of the damage scene should be taken by you as well, and these photos should also show where the car was parked and where the accident took place.

Varying damages done to your parked vehicle is the next step that you should take, and if you can still drive this car, it is also necessary that you take it down to an auto repair shop so it can be looked at thoroughly.

The essence of taking the car to the auto repair shop apart from having professionals look at it is also for you to be able to have an estimate at hand that you can present before the insurance company of the at-fault driver regarding the damages that your vehicle has suffered and this means that the insurance company of the at-fault driver is going to bear the cost for repairing your vehicle.

You might have a little difficulty during negotiations since the at-fault driver wasn’t at the accident scene but ended up leaving a note behind. Another factor that comes into play when negotiating for the cost of damage and repairs is if your car was parked legally.

If you did not park your car legally, you would be held accountable for some damages as well. The amount of compensation that you are going to receive would depend greatly on where the accident happened and also how you parked your car.

In some states, this is referred to as the contributory negligence rule, which could mean you cannot claim all damages because you contributed to the damage. This is because the damage that your vehicle suffers can be a result of so many factors. For example, if it is the rear part of your vehicle that got hit, then your bumper and rear lights are likely to be the part of the vehicle that would be affected.

If the damage happened at the side of your vehicle, then your mirrors, windshield, side windows, doors, and side panel could be the part of the vehicle to receive the damage. If the crash happened at speed, then it is likely for your car to be damaged badly, or it might even go as far as your car getting totaled.

If your car was parked illegally and damaged by an oncoming truck overnight, then your car stands the risk of getting totaled, and in this case, you might not be getting any form of compensation for it either.

Consult With An Attorney

If someone hit my parked car and left a note yet the at-fault driver’s insurance company isn’t willing to pay for the cost of damages, then taking legal action is the right and proper thing for you to do.

You should consult with an attorney who would make sure that your legal claims are on the right track, and since they work on a contingency basis, you really have nothing to be worried about.

This means that the lawyer would not be getting any form of payment till you are compensated for the damages done to your car.
